According to India State of Forest Report 2019, prepared by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), India now has a total of 21.67 per cent of its area under forest and tree cover which is still far from its target of 33 per cent.

Instead of just canopy cover or hectares, the need is to focus on what is a 'thriving forest' or an 'ecosystem'.

As part of its climate action plan, India has committed to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5-3 billion tonnes of CO2- equivalent through additional forest cover and tree over by 2030.

Even though a progress has been made in increasing the green cover over rthe past few years, the country is still quite far from achieving its target of 33 percent of the total geographical area by 2030.

India/s Forest Cover increased by One percent i.e. 32,869 sq km in 5 years.
