Prayasvin Patel

Prayasvin Bhanubhai Patel was born on the 3rd of April 1958 at Mumbai. He has done his schooling from Vallabh Vidyanagar and then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Sardar Patel University, Vallahb Vidyanagar attaining a First Class with Distinction.

Mr. Prayasvin Patel holds a Master of Business Administration from Loyola University of U.S.A. At the young age of 25 years he decided to share the responsibility of his father Shri Bhanubhai Patel and joined Elecon Engineering Co. Ltd as the Joint Managing Director on 1st July, 1983.

He took over the responsibility as the Managing Director on 1st July 1993, and on 1st February 2006 he took charge of the overall responsibilities of Elecon as the Chairman and Managing Director. On joining the organization, Mr. Prayasvin Patel took charge of the entire responsibility of both the Gear and MHE divisions of the business. His keenness to improvise, hands on approach and his active participation has seen the Gear Division rise to become Asia’s Largest manufacturer of Industrial Gears with the facilities being acknowledged as amongst the most modern ones in the world.

The Gear Division manufactures the largest range of industrial gearboxes and power transmission products and has set a benchmark in the Indian Gear Industry by introducing many firsts. It has also proudly partnered the Indian Navy, by supplying them with marine gearboxes for their stealth warships and air craft carrier. The Gear Division also holds the distinction of being the only manufacturer of MW capacity gearboxes for wind turbine generators, which has the capacity to produce 2 MW of power.

This has risen the status of Elecon Gears by making them join the elite list of gear box manufacturers which was earlier restricted to Europe. The separate Material Handling Equipment which is amongst the pioneers to introduce the concept of sophisticated Bulk Material Handling Equipment in India, under the leadership of Mr. Prayasvin Patel has set a high watermark in the industry. His guidance led the MHE Division to become the first Indian Company to sell over 100 stacker-reclaimer (combined machine) throughout the globe and by selling 225 Wagon Tippler, the MHE Division has become on the 3rd company in the world to attain this feat.

Mr. Patel is actively involved in the decision making for various technical and commercial matters including the marketing for both Gear and MHE Division. Elecon has become the supplier of choice for various sectors like Thermal Power Stations, Fertilizer Plants, Steel Plants, Coal Handling Plants, Lignite and Iron Ore Mines, Cement Industries, Chemicals, Plastic Extrusion, Rubber and Sugar Industry. His knack for opportunity and his business acumen has seen Elecon grow steeply. Mr. Prayasvin Patel also holds top positions in other companies like he is the MD of Power Build Limited (a company that makes geared motors and reducers), the Promoter of Madhubhan Resort and Spa (a resort), a member of the Board at Eimco-Elecon (India) Ltd. (a company manufacturing mining equipments), Prayas Engineering Ltd. (a multi-focal company making equipments and is also involved in casting and forging processes) amongst other small organizations.

Under his leadership Elecon’s turnover has more than doubled in five years. His ability to catch the wave of the market and his visionary approach led Elecon to make its first international acquisition by acquiring Benzlers-Radicon Group from the David Brown Gear Systems. Mr. Prayasvin Patel always finds time to pursue his passion for photography and is actively involved in the development of society through various Corporate Social Responsibility and personal initiatives. He participates in games like Cricket, Table Tennis, Carom, Squash, Bridge, etc.

He was instrumental behind the setting up of EL CARE, a social service wing of Elecon Group of Companies, which believes in reaching out to the society by going out and researching for causes that need attention rather than supporting fixed causes. Some of the major activities of EL CARE are setting up a cardiac centre, dialysis centre, trauma centre and CT Scan centre at Shri Krishna Hospital at Karamsad. He provides scholarships to 60 students of BVM Engineering College, and other meritorious students, while contributing in a positive way to 3 schools. He personally helps the children with special needs by sending them on day trips amongst other things. He also supports various other causes that come to his attention. He lends his support to the Elecon Ladies Forum (ELF – a conceptual initiative of Taruna Prayasvin Patel), through which ladies of the Elecon Family come together to carry out developmental activities in nearby villages. He has also gifted ‘The Elecon Tennis Academy’ (an academy that is producing national and international level players) and 3 parks to the people of Vidyanagar. For his achievements both in the business sector and as a human, he was honored as being a Charotar Ratna by the Rotary Club.
